Revisions to the Canadian Standards and Guidelines for Career Development Practitioners

In 2009 there was a call to associations/action groups to review the existing Canadian Standards and Guidelines for Career Development Practitioners (S&Gs) and report on incomplete and/or missing competencies or competency areas which are required to reflect current practice. A summary of input identified two main areas needing to be addressed:

• Diversity: the most common recommendation across submissions referred to the need for a more robust emphasis on competencies related to working with diverse populations;
• Technology: the second most common recommendation referred to competencies required to incorporate technologies into service delivery.

 In July of 2010 a Standards and Guidelines Working Group made up of career development specialists with expertise in the fields of diversity and technology was formed to begin work on the needed revisions.  The first revisions to the core competencies are completed.

 Focus groups to review the core competencies as they relate to diversity and technology and to provide input on the suggested revisions will be held at CANNEXUS on Tuesday, January 25^th from 5.15 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.  Practitioners are invited to choose one of the two main areas they would like to address: diversity or technology. This is an opportunity to contribute your input and expertise to keep our S&Gs vital and truly reflective of our practice.
